This piece has so much meaning to me. Performed by the BSO on the day JFK was assassinated in tribute only a couple of hours after he died, it has always lifted me up with its depth of soul. The original work is written in 4/8 time. It has been reworked in 4/4 or common time. It is in the original key of c minor. This movement gained so much fame that the Third Symphony was advertised as the symphony with the “Marche Funebre.”
With its somber beginning and masterful treatment, the incredible fugue that begins at measure 115 really raised the students’ commitment when performing the piece. This was our first shot at Beethoven and what came out of it was the students and myself becoming awestruck by his simplicity and perfect harmonic underpinnings. And, the construction of the movement from beginning to end was another instance of his genius. Any musician worth their salt has to discover Beethoven. This movement will definitely pique their interest.
