Instrumentation: 2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, 3 Bb Clarinets, 1 Bass Clarinet, 2 Bassoons, 1 Soprano Sax, 1 Alto Sax with divisi, 1 Tenor Sax, 1 Baritone Sax, 2 Bb Trumpets, 3 French Horns, 3 Trombones, 1 Baritone TC, 1 Tuba, 1 String Bass, and Timpani

This piece has been moved from B minor to Bb minor. This was done for simple playability. Schubert gave us wonderful melodies to work with in this 3/4 metered opening movement. There is a hint of “Romanticism” in the work, a possible bridge from the classical era to the Romantic era. Unlike the Beethoven, I did write out the double sixteenth notes for clarinets and saxes that mimic the strings. The tempo is more relaxed in this instance.

This piece is on the easier side of all the arrangements and should be very conducive to an above average high school wind ensemble. But, to capture the nuance is the key to great music-making.

The highlight of the movement begins at measure 171 at the fortissimo tutti. Low brass really get to show off great tone in this section. While they are announcing themselves there is a wonderful 16th note run in clarinets and saxes that should be played with great length and breadth. Just a lot of fun Very accessible.
