Brahms - SYMPHONY No. 1 in C Minor
SYMPHONY No. 1 in C Minor, op. 68 – Movement 4 Adagio, Piu Andante, Allegro non troppo, ma non con brio
by Johannes Brahms
Score 66 Pages 8 ½ x 14 (Legal)
Instrumentation: 2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, 3 Bb Clarinets, 1 Bass Clarinet, 1 Bassoon, 2 Alto Saxes, 1 Tenor Sax, 1 Baritone Sax, 2 BbTrumpets, 4 French Horns, 2 trombones, 1 Bass trombone, 1 Euphonium in BC, 1 Tuba, 1 String Bass, and Timpani
This iconic first symphony by Brahms was his long-awaited attempt at the genre. Coming late in his compositional career, he had been intimidated by the greatness of Beethoven’s symphonies. This fourth movement transcription is complete with all of his majesty. The well-known lyrical melody found in this movement was often said resembled Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” melody to which Brahm’s said anyone not recognizing the similarity is simply an ass.
Pizzacato effects are indicated by staccato markings for woodwinds, especially the saxes. These should be played with that color in mind. Careful attention to the strings undercurrent during the French horn melody have been spread across the clarinets and saxes and should be played sotto voce in many instances. The key is to connect the overlapping parts without bumps in sound. The third clarinet is utilized to assist this effect.
This movement is written in the original key. Enjoy!!
